Relative Strength Index (RSI): The Power of Momentum

One of the most useful oscillators is the Relative Strength Index, or RSI. Developed by J. Welles Wilder Jr., it measures the strength of price movements on a scale of 0 to 100. It helps to assess momentum and conditions where buying or selling pressure has become unusually strong.

Its purpose is to help traders understand the current strength and behaviour of price movement.

Why Is RSI Important?

  • RSI helps measure the strength of a price movement, showing whether upward or downward momentum is becoming stronger.

  • It helps identify overbought and oversold conditions

  • It adds context to price movement. A stock may be moving higher, but RSI can help assess whether momentum is supporting that move.

  • Its 0–100 scale makes momentum easy to monitor and interpret, giving traders a clear numerical reference instead of relying only on visual price movement.

  • RSI can help traders avoid making decisions based only on whether a stock is rising or falling. It adds another layer of information before taking a position.

  • RSI is a versatile indicator that can be applied to stocks as well as other financial markets, including forex, commodities and cryptocurrencies.

  • It can be combined with other technical tools to create a better view of the market.
